Complete Char Dham Yatra Guide

The Char Dham Yatra — the circuit of four sacred shrines of Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath — is one of the most revered pilgrimages in Hinduism and one of the most breathtaking journeys through the Garhwal Himalayas. Junegiri Yatra has guided over 2,847 pilgrims on this transformative circuit, departing from our hometown of Haridwar — the traditional starting point of the Char Dham Yatra.

Our complete 9-night, 10-day Char Dham Yatra covers all four dhams in the traditional order. Yamunotri, the source of the Yamuna River, is reached via a 6-km trek from Janki Chatti. Gangotri, the origin of the Ganga, sits at 3,048m in a dramatic glacial valley. Kedarnath, the highest Jyotirlinga dedicated to Lord Shiva, requires either an 18-km trek or a short helicopter hop from Phata or Sersi. Badrinath, enshrined between the Nar and Narayan peaks, is accessible by road and concludes the yatra with the grand Maha Abhishek puja at the Vishnu temple.

For pilgrims with limited time or mobility, our helicopter options make the yatra accessible without physical strain. The Kedarnath Helicopter Yatra completes the most strenuous leg by air. Our flagship Char Dham Helicopter Yatra covers all four dhams in 7 nights using chartered helicopters, luxury guesthouses, and dedicated pujaris for private darshan arrangements — ideal for senior devotees, corporate groups, and international pilgrims.

All ground packages include private AC vehicle transport, all meals (vegetarian sattvic), hotel accommodation near each dham, a devoted yatra manager accompanying the group throughout, and pre-arranged puja bookings at each temple. Our team handles all Kedarnath registration and biometric requirements on your behalf.

Your Complete Guide to Char Dham Yatra from Haridwar

The Char Dham — four abodes of the divine — sits at the headwaters of India's most sacred rivers, scattered across the high Garhwal Himalayas between 1,981m (Gangotri) and 3,583m (Kedarnath). The traditional yatra circuit follows a precise sequence: Yamunotri first, then Gangotri, then Kedarnath, and finally Badrinath. This sequence aligns with both the positions of the shrines on the map (west to east) and the religious order of the associated deities.

Temple Opening and Closing Dates

All four Char Dham shrines open on specific auspicious dates in April or May (usually Akshaya Tritiya for Gangotri, and Shubh Muhurta for others) and close for winter between October and November (usually on Diwali or Bhai Dooj). The exact dates are announced by the temple committees based on the Hindu Panchang calendar. We update our website and WhatsApp broadcast list with dates each year as soon as they are officially declared.

The Kedarnath Trek Route

The 18-km trail from Gaurikund begins at 1,982m and climbs through rhododendron forests, rocky switchbacks, and glacial streams to Kedarnath at 3,583m. Key stops include Jungle Chatti (4 km), Bheembali (6 km), Lincholi (8 km), and Rambara (13 km). Porters, ponies, dolis (palanquins), and helicopter services operate from Gaurikund. Our team pre-arranges pony and doli bookings to avoid last-minute waits.

Accommodation Near the Dhams

Accommodation near the shrines ranges from basic GMVN guesthouses and dharamshalas to private lodges. Kedarnath offers only tented accommodation and GMVN huts near the temple. Badrinath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri have a wider range of private guesthouses. Our packages use verified, clean properties with vegetarian catering. Upgrades to riverside or mountain-view rooms are available on request.

What to Carry for the Yatra

Essential items include warm woolens (even in May, nights near the shrines drop below 5°C), comfortable walking shoes, a personal first-aid kit, any prescription medication, a raincoat, and a reusable water bottle. The shrines have strict dress codes — non-revealing, modest clothing is required inside all temple compounds. Electronic devices should be kept in waterproof pouches during the Kedarnath trek.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. The Uttarakhand government mandates biometric registration for all pilgrims visiting Kedarnath and other Char Dham shrines during the yatra season. Registration is done through the official Devasthanam Board portal. Our team handles all registration formalities on behalf of our group pilgrims — you simply need to provide a valid photo ID and recent photograph at the time of booking.

The yatra season typically runs from Akshaya Tritiya (April/May) to Diwali (October/November). May–June and September–October are the most popular windows with stable weather and clear skies. July–August sees heavy monsoon rains which can cause landslides and road closures. We monitor NDMA advisories daily and keep pilgrims updated on route safety.

Yes, with the right package. Badrinath is fully road-accessible and suitable for elderly pilgrims. Gangotri and Yamunotri involve short walks of 1–3 km that can be completed by palanquin (doli) or horseback, which we arrange. Kedarnath requires either a helicopter or a pony/doli for those unable to trek. Our Char Dham Helicopter package is specifically designed for senior devotees.

The trek route from Gaurikund to Kedarnath is 18 km one-way at altitudes between 1,980m and 3,583m and takes 6–8 hours. It is a spiritually rewarding but physically demanding journey. The helicopter route from Phata or Sersi takes just 7–10 minutes and drops you 500m from the temple. Helicopter slots are limited and must be booked weeks in advance during peak season — we handle all bookings.

Our standard group departures accommodate 6 to 20 pilgrims per vehicle convoy. Private group departures for families or corporate groups of 2 to 50 persons are available with dedicated vehicle fleets and a private yatra manager. Solo pilgrims are welcomed into scheduled group departures.

We recommend booking at least 60–90 days in advance for May–June departures, which are the most heavily subscribed. September–October bookings should be made 30–45 days in advance. Helicopter yatra packages, especially the full Char Dham helicopter circuit, should be booked 90+ days ahead as helicopter slots are allocated by a government lottery system.

Our yatra managers carry basic altitude sickness medication and pulse oximeters throughout the journey. All pilgrims are briefed on acclimatisation protocols at Haridwar. Rest days are built into the full Char Dham itinerary. Pilgrims with pre-existing heart or lung conditions are advised to consult their doctor and share medical history with us before booking.

Cancellations 30+ days before departure: full refund minus 5% processing fee. 15–29 days before: 75% refund. 7–14 days before: 50% refund. Less than 7 days: non-refundable. If the yatra is cancelled by government order due to natural disaster or shrine closure, a full credit or rescheduling to the next available date is offered at no charge.

We assist with Abhishek puja bookings at Kedarnath and Badrinath through the Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee (BKTC). Priority darshan queues can be arranged at additional cost for Badrinath. Please note that VVIP darshan (direct government-tier access) at Kedarnath is managed directly by the state government and cannot be commercially guaranteed; we facilitate applications on your behalf.

Children aged 5 and above can comfortably join Badrinath and Gangotri itineraries. The Kedarnath trek is not recommended for children under 12. Helicopter options make Kedarnath accessible to younger children and are included in our family-friendly packages. All our vehicles have safety seats available for toddlers and young children on request.
