About This Tour

The Indrahar Pass Trek is one of the most rewarding crossings in the Dhauladhar range of Himachal Pradesh. Starting from the vibrant McLeod Ganj — the Dalai Lama's residence in exile — the trail climbs steeply through oak and rhododendron forests to the iconic Triund meadow before continuing higher to the rarely visited Lahesh Cave and ultimately the Indrahar Pass at 4,342 metres (14,245 ft).

What makes Indrahar special is the dual panorama from the pass. Standing on the summit, you see the lush green Kangra Valley and the plains of Punjab stretching behind you to the south, while ahead lies the snowbound spine of the Pir Panjal range — the same peaks you see from Shimla. On a clear day, the contrast between the subtropical foothills below and the cold alpine world around you is almost surreal.

The trek follows a classic acclimatisation arc: Triund (2,875m) on Day 1 → Lahesh Cave (3,400m) on Day 2 → Indrahar Pass (4,342m) on Day 3. This steady altitude gain allows the body to adjust without rushing. The Lahesh Cave camp — a large overhanging rock shelter used by Gaddi shepherds for centuries — is one of the most atmospheric overnight spots in all of Himachal Pradesh.

Junegiri Yatra manages all logistics: transport from Haridwar or Chandigarh to McLeod Ganj, certified Dhauladhar trek guides, camping equipment, and all meals on trail. The best seasons are April to June and September to November — July and August are possible but wet underfoot. This trek suits anyone who has completed at least one multi-day trek before; it is not recommended as a first trek due to the altitude and steep sections above Lahesh Cave.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

DAY 1
Day 1 — McLeod Ganj to Triund
📍 Trek 9 km / Altitude gain to 2,875 m / 4–5 hrs
After an early morning briefing in McLeod Ganj, the trail begins at Dharamkot and climbs through forest to the Magic View Café before opening into the famous Triund meadow. The last kilometre is steep — 22 hairpin switchbacks — but the payoff is enormous: a vast flat meadow with the Dhauladhar wall rising above and the Kangra Valley spread below. Camp at Triund, acclimatise, and enjoy your first high-altitude sunset.

DAY 2
Day 2 — Triund to Lahesh Cave
📍 Trek 6 km / Altitude gain to 3,400 m / 4–5 hrs
The trail climbs steadily above the treeline from Triund, passing through rocky alpine terrain. Snow patches are common above 3,100m even in summer. Lahesh Cave is a massive overhanging rock that provides natural shelter and has been used by Gaddi nomadic shepherds for generations. The cave can shelter 15–20 people. Camp beside or below the cave. This altitude requires an early night and good hydration — the pass attempt tomorrow starts at 4am.

DAY 3
Day 3 — Lahesh Cave to Indrahar Pass and Return
📍 Trek 5 km to pass + descent / Max altitude 4,342 m / 8–9 hrs
A 4am start in the dark, following head-torch light up steep boulder fields and snow slopes to the Indrahar Pass at 4,342 metres. At the top, the Pir Panjal range reveals itself on the far side — a sea of snow-covered peaks stretching toward Lahul and Spiti. Spend time at the pass before descending carefully back to Lahesh Cave or continuing to Chamba district on the far side (Chamba crossing is a separate full-day itinerary). Return trekkers descend to Triund for the final night.

DAY 4
Day 4 — Triund Descent to McLeod Ganj
📍 Trek 9 km / Descent to 1,450 m / 3–4 hrs
After a relaxed morning in Triund watching the sunrise paint the Dhauladhar peaks, descend to McLeod Ganj via the same trail or an alternate forest path through Gallu Devi Temple. Back in McLeod Ganj by midday — celebration lunch, hot shower, and transfer to Dharamshala bus stand or onward destination.

What Travelers Say

★★★★★
Standing on Indrahar Pass with the Pir Panjal range unfolding in front of me is something I cannot describe in words. The 4am climb in the dark with head torches was eerie and magical. Junegiri guide Ranjeet was exceptional — calm, knowledgeable, and careful about pace.

★★★★★
Did Indrahar Pass in October — perfect conditions. Lahesh Cave overnight was unforgettable, woke up to frost on the tent and completely clear skies. The Kangra Valley view from Triund on the way down is one of India's great views. 100% worth the effort.
