About This Tour

The Kedarkantha Trek is one of India's most celebrated winter treks, drawing thousands of adventurers each year to the snow-blanketed ridges of Uttarkashi district. Departing from the sacred city of Haridwar, this 5-night, 6-day journey takes you through towering oak and rhododendron forests, past the frozen expanse of Juda Ka Talab, and all the way to the glittering summit at 3,810 metres above sea level. Whether you are lacing up your boots for your very first Himalayan trek or you're a seasoned hiker looking for a snow-season classic, Kedarkantha delivers an experience that stays with you long after the trail dust has settled.

What makes Kedarkantha so special is the 360-degree panorama that greets you at the top. On a clear winter morning, the peaks of Swargarohini, Bandarpoonch, Kala Nag, Ranglana, and the entire Gangotri group stretch across the horizon in a breathtaking arc of ice and rock. The summit push, done in the early hours before dawn, rewards early risers with a sunrise that turns the snowfields golden — one of the finest mountain moments in the Indian Himalaya.

The trail passes through Sankri village, the charming base-camp hub where local families have welcomed trekkers for generations. From Sankri, the route climbs gently through pine-scented forest to Juda Ka Talab, a lake that freezes solid in winter and sits inside a natural amphitheatre of snow-draped trees. Camp nights at 3,500 metres are cold and clear, and the star-filled Himalayan sky above your tent is reason enough to step outside at midnight.

Junegiri Yatra manages every detail of your Kedarkantha adventure: comfortable private transport from Haridwar to Sankri, high-quality camping gear including insulated sleeping bags and weatherproof tents, all meals freshly prepared on the trail, an experienced and certified trek guide, and all forest department permits. Our small-group format keeps the experience personal and ensures the trail stays pristine for future trekkers.

If you are planning a longer Uttarakhand adventure, pair this trek with our Pangarchulla Peak Trek for a high-altitude summit challenge, or explore the dramatic Govind Pashu Vihar on our Har Ki Dun Trek. For a spiritual dimension to your mountain journey, our Char Dham Yatra covers the four holiest shrines of Uttarakhand in a single pilgrimage circuit.

Kedarkantha is graded Easy to Moderate and is suitable for first-time trekkers with a reasonable level of fitness. No prior high-altitude experience is required, though a few weeks of cardio preparation — walking, jogging, or cycling — will significantly enhance your enjoyment on the trail. The best season runs from December through April, when snow cover is at its deepest and the landscape transforms into a pristine white wilderness. Book early, as batch sizes are kept small to protect the ecosystem and ensure a quality experience for every guest.

Day 1 — Haridwar to Sankri
📍 Drive ~220 km / approx. 8–9 hours
Your journey begins in the early morning from Haridwar. DAY 2
Day 2 — Sankri to Juda Ka Talab
📍 Trek 4 km / Altitude gain to ~2,730 m / 3–4 hrs
After an early breakfast, hit the trail as it climbs through dense oak and rhododendron forest. The path is well-defined and the ascent is gradual, making it an ideal warm-up day. Juda Ka Talab — meaning 'twin lakes' — is one of the trail's most iconic spots: a lake that freezes over completely in winter, ringed by snow-bowed trees in an ethereal silence. Set up camp on the meadow beside the frozen lake and enjoy lunch before an afternoon of acclimatisation walks and stargazing.

DAY 3
Day 3 — Juda Ka Talab to Kedarkantha Base Camp
📍 Trek 4 km / Altitude gain to ~3,500 m / 4–5 hrs
This is the day the mountains really come into view. As you ascend above the treeline, the forest gives way to open meadows blanketed in snow. The trail steepens gently and the views of the Har Ki Dun valley and surrounding peaks open up dramatically. Reach Kedarkantha Base Camp by early afternoon — a wide snowfield at 3,500 metres that serves as your launching pad for tomorrow's summit. Rest, hydrate well, eat a nourishing dinner, and sleep early: you have a pre-dawn start ahead.

Spend time on the summit, take your photographs, soak in the silence. Descend carefully to Base Camp for a warm breakfast, then continue all the way down to Sankri for a well-earned dinner and a comfortable guesthouse bed.

Complete Travel Guide to the Kedarkantha Trek — Everything You Need to Know

The Kedarkantha Trek sits in the Govind Pashu Vihar National Park buffer zone in Uttarkashi district, Uttarakhand, roughly 200 kilometres north of Haridwar. It has become synonymous with winter trekking in India for good reason: the route is logistically straightforward, the scenery is spectacular, the summit is achievable by first-timers, and the snow conditions between December and March are consistently excellent.

How to Reach the Kedarkantha Trek Starting Point

Most trekkers begin their journey at Haridwar, which is well connected by rail and road to all major Indian cities. From Haridwar, the drive to Sankri village (the trek base camp) takes approximately 8–9 hours via Dehradun and Barkot along the Yamuna valley highway. Junegiri Yatra provides private vehicle transport from Haridwar as part of all Kedarkantha packages. Alternatively, you can take a shared taxi from Dehradun's Mussoorie Bus Stand to Barkot and then a local jeep to Sankri, though this takes considerably longer.

Altitude and Acclimatisation on the Kedarkantha Trek

Understanding the altitude profile helps you prepare physically and mentally. The trek progression is as follows: Haridwar (314 m) → Sankri (1,920 m) → Juda Ka Talab (2,730 m) → Kedarkantha Base Camp (3,500 m) → Kedarkantha Summit (3,810 m). The climb is gradual and well-paced over three days of trekking, which provides adequate time for most trekkers to acclimatise naturally. Symptoms of mild altitude sickness — headache, fatigue, reduced appetite — can occur above 2,500 metres and should be reported to your guide immediately. Staying hydrated (at least 3–4 litres of water daily on the trek) is the single most important measure you can take.

What to Pack for the Kedarkantha Trek

Layering is the golden rule for Himalayan winter trekking. Your kit should include: a moisture-wicking base layer (thermal top and bottom), a mid-layer fleece or down jacket, a waterproof and windproof outer shell, trekking trousers (not denim), wool or synthetic socks (3–4 pairs), insulated gloves, a woollen hat or balaclava, and sturdy waterproof trekking boots with ankle support. Sunscreen (SPF 50+) and UV-protection sunglasses are essential — snow reflection at altitude causes rapid sunburn and snow blindness. A 40–50 litre rucksack, a headlamp with spare batteries, a personal water bottle or hydration bladder, and basic first aid (blister pads, ibuprofen, ORS sachets) round out your essential kit.

Flora, Fauna and Ecology Along the Kedarkantha Trail

The forest sections between Sankri and Juda Ka Talab pass through one of Uttarakhand's finest stands of banj oak, rhododendron, and deodar cedar. In winter, the rhododendrons are bare but the oak forest has a quiet, misty beauty that feels primeval under a cover of snow. Wildlife in the area includes the Himalayan monal (Uttarakhand's state bird), musk deer, and occasional Himalayan black bear — though sightings in winter are rare as most animals have moved to lower altitudes. The national park rules prohibit littering and campfire-making outside designated zones; Junegiri Yatra adheres strictly to Leave No Trace principles on every trek.

Kedarkantha Trek in the Context of Uttarakhand Adventure Tourism

Uttarakhand has emerged as India's premier adventure tourism destination, and the Kedarkantha Trek plays a central role in that story. The Uttarakhand Tourism Board has made significant investments in trail maintenance and guide certification in recent years, and the Forest Department's permit system helps regulate trekker numbers to protect the fragile alpine ecosystem. By booking with a responsible local operator like Junegiri Yatra, you contribute directly to the livelihoods of Sankri village families and support the sustainable management of these landscapes for generations to come.

Frequently Asked Questions

The best time for Kedarkantha Trek is December to April. This winter window offers the deepest and most reliable snow cover, transforming the trail into a pristine white landscape. January and February see the heaviest snowfall and the most dramatic conditions. March and early April are slightly warmer and great for first-timers. The trek is closed during the monsoon season (June–September) due to slippery trails and forest department restrictions.

Yes! Kedarkantha is widely regarded as one of the best beginner treks in India. It is graded Easy to Moderate, with a maximum altitude of 3,810 metres and a gradual acclimatisation profile over 3 days before the summit. No prior trekking experience is required. We recommend at least 3–4 weeks of basic fitness preparation — daily walks of 5–7 km, some stair climbing, or light jogging — to ensure you are comfortable on the trail.

Snow conditions vary by month. In December and January you can expect 2–5 feet of snow on the higher sections, with the Juda Ka Talab lake completely frozen. February often has the deepest snow, sometimes exceeding 6 feet near the summit. By March and April, snow remains on the upper trail but lower sections may be clear. Our guides monitor real-time trail conditions before every departure and will advise on appropriate footwear and accessories (microspikes are recommended from January onwards).

On Day 1 and Day 4/5 in Sankri you will stay in comfortable local guesthouses with basic amenities, shared bathrooms, and hot meals. On Days 2 and 3 on the trail, accommodation is in high-quality dome tents with ground sheets, accommodating 2 trekkers per tent. Each trekker receives a sleeping bag rated to -10°C. Toilet tents are set up at each campsite and water is available from mountain streams (filtered and treated).

Cancellations made 30 or more days before departure: full refund minus a ₹500 processing fee. Cancellations 15–29 days before departure: 50% refund. Cancellations less than 15 days before departure: no refund, but we can transfer your booking to a future batch (subject to availability). In the event that Junegiri Yatra cancels a trek due to severe weather, natural events, or government restrictions, a full refund or free reschedule will be offered. We strongly recommend purchasing travel insurance that covers trek cancellation.

Yes. We offer gear rental from our Haridwar office and at the Sankri base. Available items include: trekking poles (₹100/day), microspikes/crampons (₹150/day), gaiters (₹80/day), and balaclava + thermal gloves sets (₹200 flat). We recommend contacting us at least 5 days in advance to confirm availability for your batch dates. Sleeping bags and tents are provided as part of the package.

The minimum recommended age is 12 years (with a parent or guardian). Children aged 12–16 must be accompanied by an adult and should have reasonable fitness. There is no strict upper age limit — we have hosted trekkers in their 60s on Kedarkantha — but participants above 55 should consult their doctor before booking, particularly regarding altitude-related risks. Anyone with a history of cardiac or respiratory conditions should seek medical clearance before joining a high-altitude trek.

Absolutely. Solo travellers are very welcome and make up a significant portion of each batch. Our small-group format (maximum 12 trekkers per batch) means you will quickly bond with fellow adventurers from across India. Solo pricing is based on the standard 2-pax rate; however, if you book as a solo and are comfortable sharing a tent with another solo trekker, let us know when enquiring — we can often match solo bookings to reduce costs. WhatsApp us using the button below to check upcoming batch dates.
