About This Tour

Junegiri Yatra's 3 Nights / 4 Days Kedarnath Yatra package at ₹8,500 per person is the most focused way to complete the Kedarnath pilgrimage without rushing. The itinerary runs Haridwar → Guptkashi → Kedarnath → Haridwar, with a planned overnight halt at Guptkashi on the way up to help your body adjust to the increase in altitude before the main trek day.

We are based in Haridwar and have been running the Kedarnath circuit for years. This means we know which roads are prone to delays in which months, which accommodation blocks at Sonprayag are reliable, and which helicopter slots book out first. That local knowledge is built into how this package operates — from the timing of the Gaurikund departure (4 am for a comfortable ascent) to the best spots to rest at Lincholi before the final push to the temple.

The package includes accommodation on double sharing, dedicated vehicle transfers, and a local guide for the full circuit. Helicopter at Kedarnath and mule/doli arrangements are available as add-ons. The package does not include meals — practical roadside vegetarian food is available throughout the route and we provide a list of recommended stops. On the trek itself, Maggi, chai, and glucose biscuits are available at stalls every 2–3 km.

Group departures run every Saturday from late April through October. The package is popular with pilgrims from Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore who want a focused Kedarnath trip on a long weekend combined with a day in Haridwar or Rishikesh before departure. For pilgrims who want to extend this into a Kedarnath-Badrinath trip, our Do Dham Yatra package builds on this same circuit. For the full four-shrine pilgrimage, see our Char Dham Yatra 9N/10D package. Call +91 98738 97652 for departure dates and group booking options.

Kedarnath Yatra: Everything You Need to Know Before You Go

Kedarnath is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas and the most visited high-altitude temple in India. At 3,584 metres above sea level, it sits at the head of the Mandakini River valley, surrounded by peaks that stay snow-capped well into June. Our 3 Nights / 4 Days Kedarnath Yatra package at ₹8,500 per person covers the full circuit from Haridwar, with options for both the trek and helicopter.

The Trek Route: Gaurikund to Kedarnath

The standard trekking route starts at Gaurikund (1,982m), which is the roadhead. Sonprayag, the base camp for vehicle parking and registration, is 5 km before Gaurikund by shared jeep. The trek from Gaurikund to Kedarnath temple is 16 km one way, gaining approximately 1,600 metres in elevation. The trail is well-marked and has regular signage. It passes through dense forest in the lower sections, opens up into alpine meadows around the 10 km mark, and then crosses a long stone-laid pathway before reaching the temple complex.

The climb takes 5–7 hours depending on fitness and pace. Most trekkers leave Gaurikund by 4–5 am to reach the temple by late morning, attend darshan, and have the option to descend the same day or overnight at Kedarnath. The descent takes 3–4 hours.

Trail Facilities

Tea stalls, rest shelters (mandap), and Maggi shops are available at regular intervals along the trail — at Jungle Chatti (4 km), Bheembali (8 km), and Lincholi (11 km). Toilet facilities exist at most stops. Medical posts with basic first aid and oxygen cylinders are also stationed at Jungle Chatti and Lincholi.

Helicopter Option for Kedarnath

If the 16 km trek is not an option — due to age, health, or time constraints — Kedarnath helicopter services operate from five helipads: Phata (30 km from Gaurikund), Sirsi, Guptkashi, Agustmuni, and Sersi. The shuttle takes 7–10 minutes to the Kedarnath helipad, which is 500 metres from the temple. Return helicopter tickets are booked online and cost ₹4,500–₹6,500 per person depending on the departure point. Phata is the most frequently used helipad and typically has the most slots. Helicopter slots sell out weeks in advance in May — book as soon as your travel dates are confirmed. Our package includes assistance with helicopter booking when opted.

Best Months for Kedarnath Yatra

May and June are the most popular months — the temple is freshly opened, the snow is still visible above the temple, and the valley is green. September and early October are arguably better for a calm experience — queues are shorter, accommodation is easier to get, and the mountain views are clearer after the monsoon. The temple closes around Diwali (October–November) and opens again in late April the following year. November through April sees the temple buried in snow.

Altitude and Acclimatization

Kedarnath sits at 3,584m and altitude sickness is a real concern, especially for first-time high-altitude trekkers coming from sea-level cities. The most common symptoms are headache, nausea, dizziness, and shortness of breath. To reduce the risk: arrive at Haridwar a day early, spend a night at Guptkashi or Sonprayag before attempting the trek, stay hydrated, and avoid alcohol. Do not ascend if you have a headache — descend instead. Diamox (acetazolamide) can help with prevention but should be discussed with a doctor beforehand.

Gaurikund Hot Springs

Gaurikund has a natural hot spring (kund) at its centre, associated with the legend of Goddess Parvati performing tapasya here. Most pilgrims take a dip in the hot spring water before starting the trek — the water temperature is around 45°C. It is considered a purifying ritual before darshan at Kedarnath. The kund is small and can get crowded; early morning between 4–6 am is the least congested time.

Accommodation: Tents vs GMVN Hotels

At Kedarnath itself, accommodation options are tents (run by private operators and GMVN), fixed-roof GMVN lodges, and small dharamshalas. Tent accommodations are basic — sleeping bags, a mattress, and a shared toilet — but perfectly functional for one night. GMVN rooms fill up within hours of the booking window opening. Book GMVN online at least 3–4 weeks before your departure in peak months. At Sonprayag and Guptkashi, hotel options are better and more comfortable. Our package includes accommodation at Guptkashi for the night before the trek, which is a good altitude for overnight stay (1,319m).

Mule and Doli for Elderly Pilgrims

Mules are available for hire from Gaurikund for the trek to Kedarnath and cost ₹1,500–₹2,500 per person one way depending on the season. Dolis — covered palanquins carried by four bearers — are also available and cost more. Both are booked at the Gaurikund base. Availability can be limited in peak weeks; early morning queueing (by 4 am) is advisable. Our team can pre-arrange mule booking with local operators when informed in advance.

Kedarnath Temple: History and Significance

The Kedarnath temple is believed to have been originally built by the Pandavas after the Mahabharata war and later restored by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century. The main deity is a naturally formed triangular rock lingam, representing the hump of Nandi — the bull — in one interpretation of the legend. The temple survived the devastating 2013 floods largely intact because a large boulder lodged itself directly behind the temple, diverting the floodwaters. The rebuilt structures around the temple are newer; the main sanctum and its walls are ancient stone.

If you want to extend your pilgrimage to include Badrinath and cover both major shrines, see our Do Dham Yatra 5N/6D package. For the complete four-shrine circuit, see our Char Dham Yatra 9N/10D package. Pilgrims from southern India planning this trip can also check our guide for Char Dham Yatra from Bangalore and Char Dham Yatra from Chennai.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Kedarnath trek is 16 km one way from Gaurikund to the temple, gaining around 1,600 metres in elevation. It is rated moderate — a reasonably fit adult without prior trekking experience can complete it in 5–7 hours. The trail is paved in sections and has regular rest stops. The challenge is the altitude (3,584m) and the sustained climb over the last 6 km. Start early (4–5 am) to avoid afternoon weather changes.

Kedarnath helicopter fares range from ₹4,500 to ₹6,500 per person for a return trip, depending on the departure helipad (Phata, Sirsi, Guptkashi, or Agustmuni). Booking is done online through the IRCTC air platform or through approved operators. Slots in May sell out weeks in advance. Book as soon as your travel dates are fixed. We assist package guests with helicopter booking.

The Kedarnath temple opens every year on Akshaya Tritiya (April–May) — the exact date is determined by the temple committee based on the Hindu calendar. It closes around Diwali (October–November), usually in the last week of October. The opening and closing ceremonies are significant events attracting large crowds. Check the official Kedarnath temple authority announcement each year for exact dates.

Our Kedarnath Yatra package is priced at ₹8,500 per person. It includes 3 nights accommodation on double sharing, dedicated vehicle transfers from Haridwar to Gaurikund and back, and a local guide. It excludes helicopter charges, mule/doli fees, VVIP darshan, meals, and personal expenses. Helicopter and mule arrangements are available as add-ons.

A medical certificate is not mandatory for the Kedarnath Yatra, but the Uttarakhand government strongly advises pilgrims above 60 years or with cardiac/pulmonary conditions to carry a fitness certificate from a registered doctor. Biometric registration through the official portal is required for all pilgrims. Oxygen cylinders and first aid posts are available at Jungle Chatti and Lincholi on the trek route.

Yes. Senior citizens who cannot trek have three options: helicopter service (7–10 min flight to Kedarnath helipad), mule hire from Gaurikund, or doli (palanquin). Helicopter is the most comfortable option. Mules and dolis require some physical stability as the trail is uneven. Our package can be customised with helicopter booking and ground support for senior pilgrims.

Acclimatize by spending a night at Guptkashi (1,319m) before the trek. Stay hydrated — drink 3–4 litres of water daily. Avoid alcohol and heavy meals the night before the trek. Do not ascend if you feel a persistent headache — descend and rest. Diamox can help as a preventive measure but consult your doctor before taking it. Oxygen cylinders are available at trail posts.

Sonprayag is the base camp for Kedarnath, approximately 210 km from Haridwar via Rudraprayag and Guptkashi. The road journey takes 7–9 hours depending on traffic and road conditions. From Sonprayag, shared jeeps run to Gaurikund (5 km). Private vehicles are not permitted beyond Sonprayag. Our package includes a dedicated vehicle for the full Haridwar–Sonprayag–Haridwar route.

The Gaurikund hot spring (kund) is a natural thermal spring at around 45°C associated with Goddess Parvati. Most pilgrims take a dip here as a ritual purification before the Kedarnath trek. It is open to all — there are separate sections for men and women. The spring is small so mornings between 4–6 am are less crowded. It is not a swimming pool; a brief ritual bath is the norm.

The Char Dham Yatra covers all four sacred shrines — Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath — over 9–10 days. The Kedarnath Yatra is a standalone trip to just one shrine, completed in 3–4 days. If you want to add Badrinath to this trip, the Do Dham Yatra (5N/6D) is the next step. The full Char Dham Yatra is a separate, longer commitment. Many pilgrims complete the four shrines in multiple trips over different years.
