About This Tour

The Kareri Lake Trek is Dharamshala's best-kept trekking secret — a 3-night, 4-day journey that takes you from the vibrant lanes of McLeod Ganj into a deeply peaceful forest landscape, past roaring river crossings and traditional Gaddi shepherd villages, to a pristine alpine lake nestled under the towering Dhauladhar range at 2,950 metres. Unlike the more crowded Triund ridge, Kareri draws a quieter, more adventurous crowd — and the reward is a lake so clear you can see the bottom, ringed by peaks and rhododendron slopes.

The approach begins from Kareri village, a small cluster of traditional Himachali stone houses an hour's drive from McLeod Ganj. The trail follows the Nyund Nallah stream, crossing it multiple times on log bridges and stepping stones — part of the trek's signature charm. The forest canopy of oak, maple, and rhododendron is spectacular in spring (April–May) when the rhododendrons bloom crimson, and in autumn (October) when the maples turn gold.

The lake itself is a natural glacial bowl at 2,950 metres, almost perfectly circular, with the Dhauladhar peaks reflected on its surface on calm mornings. In early spring the lake is partially frozen; by May it is fully open and the surrounding meadows are carpeted in wildflowers. The camping ground on the lake shore is flat and well-maintained, with a small Forest Department hut nearby. On a clear night, the Milky Way stretches across the sky without a trace of light pollution.

Junegiri Yatra manages all logistics: transport from McLeod Ganj to Kareri village, camping equipment including -5°C sleeping bags, all trail meals, a certified local guide, and Himachal Pradesh forest permits. The trek is graded Easy to Moderate — the river crossings add some challenge but the altitude gain is gradual and manageable. Best season: April to June and September to November.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

DAY 1
Day 1 — McLeod Ganj to Kareri Village, Trek to Camp
📍 Drive 14 km to Kareri village + Trek 4 km / Altitude gain to 1,980 m / 2–3 hrs
Drive from McLeod Ganj to Kareri village (1,800m), a charming cluster of traditional Gaddi shepherd homes on a wooded hillside. Begin the trek along the Nyund Nallah stream, crossing it twice on log bridges. The forest is dense and birdsong-filled — watch for Himalayan birds including the blue-capped rock thrush. Set up camp by the stream at 1,980m in time for a hot dinner.

DAY 2
Day 2 — Camp to Kareri Lake
📍 Trek 8 km / Altitude gain to 2,950 m / 6–7 hrs
The main trekking day. The trail climbs steadily through increasingly open terrain, with the river crossings becoming more frequent and more thrilling. Above the treeline, the valley opens into a wide alpine meadow and the Kareri Lake basin reveals itself — a blue-green oval of still water reflecting the Dhauladhar peaks. Set up camp on the lake shore and spend the afternoon exploring, fishing, or simply sitting in the extraordinary silence.

DAY 3
Day 3 — Rest Day at Kareri Lake
📍 Optional exploration / Rest and acclimatisation
A full day at the lake. Optional activities include a climb to the ridge above the lake for panoramic views of the Dhauladhar range and down into the Kangra valley, or a circuit walk around the lake shore. Many guests simply rest, read, take photographs, and absorb the extraordinary mountain silence. This extra day separates Kareri from most short treks — it allows genuine immersion in the high-altitude environment.

DAY 4
Day 4 — Kareri Lake to McLeod Ganj
📍 Trek 12 km descent + Drive / 5–6 hrs total
Begin the descent early to enjoy the morning light on the lake before leaving. The downhill trek retraces the outward route and takes 4–5 hours at a comfortable pace. Reach Kareri village by early afternoon, board the vehicle, and return to McLeod Ganj. Celebrate in the cafés of McLeod Ganj with momos and chai. Trek concludes.

What Travelers Say

★★★★★
Kareri Lake completely blew me away. I'd done Triund and thought Dharamshala was 'done' — Kareri is on another level. The river crossings are a blast and the lake is absolutely pristine. Very well organised by Junegiri Yatra.

The rest day at the lake was the best decision. We climbed the ridge behind the lake and could see the Kangra valley stretching all the way to the plains. Guide was fantastic and the camping food was surprisingly great.

Complete Guide to Kareri Lake Trek from Dharamshala

Kareri Lake sits in the Dhauladhar Wildlife Sanctuary above Dharamshala, at the base of the sheer rock wall that defines the Dhauladhar range. The lake feeds the Nyund Nallah stream, which in turn flows through the forested gorge that makes up the approach trail. The combination of lush lowland forest, multiple river crossings, and a pristine high-altitude lake gives Kareri a character entirely distinct from other Himachal treks of similar length and difficulty.

How to Reach Dharamshala / McLeod Ganj

McLeod Ganj is connected to Delhi by overnight Volvo bus (12 hours), to Chandigarh by bus (5 hours), and by flights to Gaggal/Kangra Airport (25 km). Junegiri Yatra provides private transport from McLeod Ganj to the Kareri village trailhead as part of all packages.

Flora and Wildlife on the Kareri Trail

The forest below 2,500 metres is a mix of banj oak, rhododendron, and maple — spectacular in April when the rhododendrons bloom red and the oak is bright with new leaves. Above 2,500 metres the vegetation transitions to alpine meadow with Himalayan blue poppy, primrose, and gentian. The sanctuary protects snow leopard (rare sightings), musk deer, Himalayan black bear, and a rich birdlife including the Himalayan monal, blue-capped rock thrush, and lammergeier vulture.

Sustainable Trekking at Kareri Lake

Kareri Lake sits within the Dhauladhar Wildlife Sanctuary and the forest department has strict rules about campfires, littering, and noise levels near the lake. Junegiri Yatra operates on full Leave No Trace principles — all waste is carried out, campfires are only made at designated spots (or gas stoves used instead), and group sizes are kept small. By trekking with a responsible operator, you directly support the preservation of this irreplaceable ecosystem.

Frequently Asked Questions

Kareri Lake is graded Easy to Moderate. The trail itself is not technically demanding, but the multiple river crossings require balance and confidence. The total distance is around 24 km over 3 days of trekking, with a gradual altitude gain to 2,950 metres. Anyone with reasonable fitness can complete this trek. A 3–4 week fitness preparation of daily walking is recommended.

The two best windows are April–June and September–November. April–May offers rhododendron blooms and the lake transitioning from frozen to open. October has crisp visibility and the chance of light snow dusting on the Dhauladhar ridge. July–August are avoided as monsoon rains make the river crossings dangerous and the trail very slippery.

Yes — Junegiri Yatra guides are trained in safe river crossing techniques and assist every trekker at each crossing. Crossings are on stepping stones or log bridges depending on water levels. In high water conditions (late June after heavy rains), we use trekking poles and guide ropes. July–August crossings can be genuinely dangerous and we do not operate in that window.

Yes — a popular 5-day Dharamshala combo does Triund on Day 1–2 and Kareri on Day 3–5. Junegiri Yatra offers this as a custom itinerary. WhatsApp us for combined pricing and logistics.

Kareri Lake has a small population of brown trout. Fishing requires a permit from the Himachal Pradesh Fisheries Department, which can be arranged in advance through Junegiri Yatra. Catch-and-release is encouraged to preserve the ecosystem. The lake is a protected area under the Dhauladhar Wildlife Sanctuary.

There is a small Forest Department rest house at the lake that can be booked in advance (limited availability). Junegiri Yatra provides high-quality dome tents with sleeping bags rated to -5°C. There are no permanent lodges or tea stalls at the lake — you are in true wilderness camping territory.
