Char Dham Yatra Packing List 2026

Junegiri Yatra Team·15 January 2026·8 min read

Why Your Packing List Makes or Breaks the Yatra

The Char Dham circuit — Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath — spans elevations from 1,300 metres at Haridwar to 3,584 metres at the Kedarnath temple. The temperature difference between your starting point and the summit shrine can exceed 20°C on the same day. Underpacking means shivering through a sacred dawn; overpacking means struggling up the 16-km Kedarnath trek with a bag that defeats you before the deity does.

This list is built from thousands of pilgrimages organised by the Junegiri Yatra Char Dham 9N/10D package team. Use it as your master checklist.

Essential Documents

Documents are the single most important category — forget your thermal jacket and you can buy one in Rudraprayag; forget your registration slip and you may be turned away at the check post.

  • Yatra Registration Slip — printed and digital copy from the official Char Dham Yatra portal (registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in). Required at every check post.
  • Aadhaar Card / Passport — original and two photocopies. Lodges along the route often ask for ID.
  • Medical fitness certificate — mandatory for pilgrims over 50 years old and strongly recommended for all. Any MBBS doctor can issue one.
  • Travel insurance policy — cover should include high-altitude evacuation (minimum ₹10 lakh).
  • Helicopter booking confirmation — if you have booked a Kedarnath or Badrinath helicopter, keep a printed copy and the booking reference number.
  • Emergency contacts list — written on paper in case your phone dies.

Clothing — Layer System for All 4 Dhams

The golden rule in the Himalayas is layers, not bulk. A layering system lets you adapt as the temperature changes from Haridwar's heat to Kedarnath's cold.

Base Layer (worn against skin)

  • 2 pairs thermal underwear (top and bottom) — merino wool is ideal, polyester works
  • 3 moisture-wicking T-shirts
  • 2 pairs of lightweight trekking trousers

Mid Layer (insulation)

  • 1 fleece jacket or heavy sweatshirt — critical for early morning puja at Kedarnath
  • 1 light down jacket (650+ fill power preferred)

Outer Shell

  • 1 windproof and waterproof jacket — Kedarnath sees sudden rain even in May
  • 1 pair of waterproof trousers or rain cover

Modesty and Temple Dress

All four dhams require modest clothing. Shoulders and knees must be covered inside the temples. Carry:

  • 2 traditional kurta-pyjama or salwar-kameez sets
  • A dupatta or stole (also useful as an extra warm layer)

Footwear

  • Trekking shoes — ankle support is essential for the Kedarnath trek. Break them in before you leave; do not attempt the trek in new shoes.
  • Waterproof hiking sandals — for ghats and temple courtyards where shoes must be removed.
  • 3 pairs merino wool or synthetic trekking socks
  • Gaiters — highly recommended if you trek Kedarnath in May when snow patches can appear on the path.

Medicines and First Aid

Consult your doctor before the yatra. The list below is a general reference, not medical advice.

  • Diamox (Acetazolamide) 250 mg — for altitude sickness prevention. Start 24 hours before ascending to Kedarnath. Prescription required.
  • Paracetamol / Crocin
  • Antacids (Pantoprazole, Gelusil)
  • ORS sachets — dehydration is common
  • Betadine and bandages
  • Anti-diarrhoeal (Loperamide)
  • Motion sickness tablets (for winding mountain roads)
  • Personal prescription medicines with a doctor's note
  • Knee support bands — the descent from Kedarnath is hard on knees

Trek Gear for Kedarnath

The Kedarnath trek (14 km one way from Gaurikund) is the only trekking segment in the standard Char Dham circuit. For all other dhams the roads reach close to the temples.

  • Trekking poles — dramatically reduce strain on the knees during descent. Available for rent at Gaurikund (₹100–150/day) but personal poles are better.
  • Daypack 20–25 litres — leave your main luggage at the lodge in Gaurikund or Sonprayag
  • Headlamp with extra batteries — many pilgrims start at 3 AM for early darshan
  • Sunscreen SPF 50+ — UV exposure increases at altitude
  • UV-protection sunglasses
  • Packable rain poncho

General Essentials

  • Power bank (20,000 mAh) — charging points are scarce on the trail
  • Water bottle (1 litre) + water purification tablets
  • Small combination padlock for guesthouse lockers
  • Dry bags or ziplock bags to protect electronics and documents from rain
  • Compact torch / flashlight
  • Snacks: energy bars, dry fruits, glucose biscuits for the trek

What NOT to Pack

  • Heavy suitcases — a 40–50 litre backpack is ideal; wheeled luggage is impractical
  • Leather shoes — they get destroyed on wet mountain trails
  • Excessive jewellery or cash — keep only what you need
  • Single-use plastic — many Uttarakhand zones have banned it; carry a reusable bag

Frequently Asked Questions

Pack warm layers for Kedarnath (3,584m) — thermal underwear, fleece, windproof jacket. Light clothes for Haridwar and Badrinath are fine during the day. Always carry modest clothing (kurta/salwar) for temple entry.

Not required if staying in hotels and guesthouses. Junegiri Yatra packages include accommodation with blankets. Carry a light fleece sleeping bag liner for extra warmth in budget lodges near Kedarnath base camp.

Yes. Foreign nationals can visit all four dhams — Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath — without restriction. Carry your passport and valid Indian visa. Register online at the official Char Dham portal; passport number is accepted instead of Aadhaar.

Carry Indian Rupees (INR) in cash. ATMs exist in Rishikesh, Rudraprayag, and Guptkashi but may be out of service on busy pilgrimage days. Exchange USD/GBP/EUR at banks or authorised forex counters in Delhi, Haridwar, or Rishikesh before heading into the mountains.

Not mandatory but strongly recommended. Choose a policy that covers high-altitude trekking (above 3,500m), medical evacuation by helicopter, and trip cancellation. World Nomads, Allianz, and SafetyWing are popular choices for international travellers.

Fly into Delhi (IGI Airport), then take a flight or overnight train to Haridwar or Dehradun. The Char Dham circuit starts and ends at Haridwar. Our packages include Delhi-to-Haridwar transfers so you can land and let us handle the rest.

Yes. The entire Char Dham region is predominantly vegetarian. Dhabas and guesthouses serve simple, hearty North Indian meals — dal, rice, roti, sabzi, khichdi. Non-vegetarian food is rare and sometimes unavailable. Inform us of any dietary restrictions (gluten-free, vegan) when booking and we will plan accordingly.
