About This Tour

The Bhrigu Lake Trek reaches one of Himachal Pradesh's most sacred and spectacular high-altitude lakes in just 3 nights and 4 days from Manali. The lake sits at 4,300 metres in an open alpine bowl with a 360-degree panorama of the Rohtang Pass ridge, Deo Tibba, and the vast Kullu valley below. According to Hindu legend, the great sage Bhrigu used this crystal-clear lake for bathing, and local communities still conduct annual rituals here.

The approach from Gulaba (on the Manali–Rohtang road) climbs through rhododendron meadows and open grassland, passing the beautiful intermediate camp at Rola Kholi. Unlike many Himachal treks that require long valley walks to reach the alpine zone, Bhrigu Lake gets you into open meadows and mountain views within hours of leaving the trailhead. The lake itself is often partially frozen even in July, and the reflections of the surrounding peaks on calm mornings are extraordinary.

This is an ideal trek for those who want a genuine high-altitude lake experience without the length and commitment of Hamta Pass or Roopkund. It is graded Easy to Moderate and suitable for first-time high-altitude trekkers. Best season: June to early October.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Your Junegiri Yatra adventure begins with a short drive from Manali to the village of Kulang, roughly 12 km away. From Kulang, the trek sets off through dense forests, crossing Chor Nallah and Kohli Nallah at several points as the trail climbs steadily up the mountain. You'll carry a packed lunch along the way, allowing you to pause and soak in the forest silence before settling into camp. The evening at Moridugh is yours to explore the campsite surroundings, acclimatize to the altitude, and end the night with breathtaking stargazing under an open Himalayan sky.

What Travelers Say

★★★★★
Bhrigu Lake was absolutely magical — partially frozen even in August, with Rohtang reflected in the water. The guide was knowledgeable and the camp at Rola Kholi is one of the most beautiful spots I've camped.

Perfect 4-day trek from Manali. Not too hard, stunning views, and the Vashisht hot springs at the end were a genius addition. Highly recommend Junegiri Yatra.

Complete Guide to Bhrigu Lake Trek from Manali

Bhrigu Lake is one of Himachal Pradesh's most accessible high-altitude lakes, reaching 4,300 metres in just two days of trekking from the Gulaba trailhead on the Manali–Rohtang road. The combination of alpine meadow walking, a sacred lake, and a hot spring recovery makes this one of the most satisfying short treks in north India.

How to Reach Manali

Manali is connected to Delhi by overnight Volvo bus (14 hours), by flights to Bhuntar Airport (50 km away), and by train to Chandigarh or Pathankot followed by a bus. Junegiri Yatra provides transport from Manali to the Gulaba trailhead as part of all Bhrigu Lake packages.

Significance of Bhrigu Lake

According to Hindu mythology, the great sage Bhrigu — author of the Bhrigu Samhita — used this lake for bathing and meditation. The lake is considered sacred by local communities, and a small religious ceremony is held each year at the lakeshore. Many trekkers perform a ritual circumambulation (parikrama) of the lake in keeping with local tradition. The lake's pristine condition is partly due to this religious reverence — littering near the lake is deeply frowned upon by local guides and communities alike.

Frequently Asked Questions

Bhrigu Lake sits at 4,300 metres (14,107 feet) above sea level. This is a genuine high-altitude trek and mild altitude sickness symptoms (headache, fatigue) are possible above 3,500 metres. Good hydration, a slow pace, and listening to your guide are the key precautions. Most trekkers acclimatise naturally given the gradual approach profile.

Yes, Bhrigu Lake is graded Easy to Moderate and is suitable for first-time high-altitude trekkers with reasonable fitness. The total trek distance is manageable (around 20 km over 3 days) and the trail is well-defined. 3–4 weeks of fitness preparation (daily walks of 5–8 km) is recommended.

Yes — this is a popular combination. Do Bhrigu Lake (3N/4D) first as an acclimatisation trek, then Hamta Pass (4N/5D) for the main crossing. Total trip: 7–8 days from Manali. Junegiri Yatra can arrange a combined itinerary with special pricing. WhatsApp us to enquire.

Bhrigu Lake is often partially frozen until late June or early July, even in summer. In June, the lake may be 60–70% frozen; by August, usually fully thawed. The combination of blue water and white ice is particularly photogenic in late June to early July. By September the lake is fully open.
