About This Tour

The Beas Kund Trek is Manali's most rewarding easy escape — a 2-night, 3-day journey to a glacial lake at 3,700 metres that holds a place of both natural beauty and mythological significance. This is the source of the Beas river, one of the five great rivers of Punjab, and according to legend the spot where the sage Vyas (Vyasa, author of the Mahabharata) bathed after completing that monumental work. The kund (pool or tank) is a still, brilliantly blue glacial lake fed directly by the Shitidhar glacier — the snout of the glacier is clearly visible a short distance above the lake.

The approach from Dhundi (on the Manali–Rohtang road) climbs through one of the finest wildflower meadows in Himachal Pradesh. In July and August, the meadow at Bakarthach (the base camp at 3,200 metres) is carpeted in blue primrose, yellow potentilla, purple aconite, and dozens of other alpine species. The views of the Hanuman Tibba (5,982 m), Shitidhar, and the entire Rohtang–Kullu ridge are outstanding from the trail.

The trek is graded Easy — the trail is well-defined, the altitude gain is gradual, and no technical skills are required. It is an ideal first Himalayan trek for families, beginners, or those who want a short but genuine mountain wilderness experience close to Manali. The trek is also popular as an acclimatisation outing for those planning the Hamta Pass Trek or more serious Himachal objectives.

Junegiri Yatra includes private transport from Manali to Dhundi, all camping equipment, a certified guide, and all meals on the mountain. The season runs from June to September, with July and August being the wildflower peak.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

DAY 1
Day 1 — Manali to Dhundi, Trek to Bakarthach
📍 Drive 14 km + Trek 6 km / Altitude gain to 3,200 m / 4–5 hrs
Drive from Manali along the Rohtang road to Dhundi (2,900 m), a small settlement at the end of the road beyond Solang Nallah. The trek begins immediately in open meadow terrain with wide views of the Kullu valley. Climb steadily through increasing wildflower density to reach Bakarthach — a broad, flat meadow camp at 3,200 metres under the shadow of Hanuman Tibba. Set up camp, acclimatise, and enjoy the sunset over the peaks.

DAY 2
Day 2 — Bakarthach to Beas Kund and Return
📍 Trek 10 km up and back / Max altitude 3,700 m / 6–7 hrs
The summit day. The trail from Bakarthach climbs through more open meadow and then moraine to the Beas Kund. The glacial lake appears almost suddenly — a brilliant blue-green pool beneath the dirty white snout of the Shitidhar glacier. The silence and scale here is extraordinary. Spend time at the lake, take photographs, and then descend back to Bakarthach for the night. For those who want more, a climb to the ridge above the kund gives views into the Rohtang plateau.

DAY 3
Day 3 — Bakarthach to Manali
📍 Trek 6 km descent + Drive / 3–4 hrs total
Descend from Bakarthach to Dhundi in the clear morning air. The downhill is quick and comfortable. Board the vehicle at Dhundi and drive back to Manali. The day is yours — explore Old Manali, visit Hadimba Temple, or prepare for onwards travel. Trek concludes.

What Travelers Say

★★★★★
Perfect first trek. We did Beas Kund and it completely changed how I think about mountains. The glacial lake at 3,700m is jaw-dropping. Two nights is the right amount — enough to really feel you're in the wilderness.

The wildflowers at Bakarthach in July are something else entirely. We spent the afternoon sitting in the meadow with Hanuman Tibba above us — nothing else like it. Junegiri Yatra made it effortless.

Complete Guide to Beas Kund Trek from Manali

Beas Kund is reached from the Dhundi trailhead on the Manali–Rohtang highway, roughly 14 km from Manali town. The route passes through the Solang Nallah valley — famous as Manali's adventure sports hub — before turning up into the quieter Bakarthach valley. The contrast between the crowded Solang chairlift and the pristine wilderness of Bakarthach meadow, just two hours above, is one of the great pleasures of this trek.

How to Reach Manali

Manali is connected to Delhi by overnight Volvo bus (14 hours), by flights to Bhuntar Airport (50 km), and by train to Chandigarh or Pathankot followed by a bus. Junegiri Yatra provides private transport from Manali to the Dhundi trailhead and back as part of all packages.

Beas Kund as an Acclimatisation Trek

For trekkers planning more demanding objectives — Hamta Pass (4,270m), Bhrigu Lake (4,300m), or Deo Tibba base camp — Beas Kund is the ideal acclimatisation warm-up. Two nights at 3,200m and a day-trip to 3,700m puts your body in excellent shape for the next challenge. Many Junegiri Yatra guests combine Beas Kund (2N/3D) with Hamta Pass (4N/5D) for a perfectly structured 6-day Manali adventure.

Beas Kund sits at 3,700 metres (12,139 feet) above sea level. The base camp at Bakarthach is at 3,200 metres. The altitude gain over two days is gradual and well-paced, giving your body time to acclimatise naturally. Stay well hydrated (3 litres/day on trek) and tell your guide immediately if you experience headaches or nausea.

Yes — Beas Kund (2N/3D) is an excellent warm-up and acclimatisation trek before Hamta Pass (4N/5D). Combined total: 6 days from Manali. Junegiri Yatra offers combined packages with special pricing. WhatsApp us for the combined itinerary.

In June, there may be snow patches above 3,400m. By July the trail is snow-free up to Bakarthach, with the glacier snout visible above the kund. The glacier itself is always present above the lake. Snow on the trail is not expected July–September.

Beas Kund is the source of the Beas (Vipasha) River, one of the five rivers of Punjab. In Hindu tradition, the lake is associated with the sage Vyasa (Vyas), who is said to have bathed here after completing the Mahabharata. 'Kund' means sacred pool or water body. The lake is revered by local Gaddi shepherds and a small ritual is performed by some trekkers and guides at the water's edge.
