Kedarnath Helicopter Booking Guide 2026

Junegiri Yatra Team·28 February 2026·7 min read

Why Helicopter Service Matters for Kedarnath Yatra

The 14-km trek from Gaurikund to Kedarnath temple is one of the most challenging treks in a pilgrimage context — steep at points, exposed to weather, and demanding even for fit adults. For elderly pilgrims, those with mobility limitations, or families with young children, the helicopter is not a luxury but a necessity.

Helicopter services have operated on this route since 2001 and have become an integral part of the Yatra infrastructure. The Uttarakhand government now regulates fares and mandates all bookings through the IRCTC helicopter booking portal to reduce touts and price gouging.

Active Helipads for Kedarnath 2026

Helicopters depart from six helipads, all within 25 km of Kedarnath. Distance from Rishikesh varies:

  • Phata (2,640m) — 198 km from Rishikesh. Most popular helipad; largest fleet. Flight time: ~7 minutes to Kedarnath.
  • Sirsi (1,800m) — 180 km from Rishikesh. Alternative option when Phata is booked.
  • Guptkashi (1,319m) — Nearest to many pilgrim lodges; 174 km from Rishikesh.
  • Agastmuni (1,000m) — 164 km from Rishikesh. Lower altitude start.
  • Sonprayag (1,829m) — Near the trek trailhead.
  • Kedarnath (3,584m) — Landing pad only, not a departure point.

How to Book on the IRCTC Portal — Step by Step

  1. Visit heliyatra.irctc.co.in (official government portal).
  2. Create or log in to your IRCTC account.
  3. Select Kedarnath as destination, choose your preferred helipad and travel date.
  4. Enter passenger details: Name, Age, Aadhaar/Passport number.
  5. Select one-way or return ticket (return is cheaper than two one-ways).
  6. Complete payment via UPI, net banking, or credit/debit card.
  7. Download and print your booking confirmation — it is checked at the helipad.

2026 Price Estimates

(Prices are set by Uttarakhand government; exact 2026 rates announced before season opening)

  • One-way fare: Approximately ₹4,500–6,500 per person depending on helipad
  • Return fare: Approximately ₹8,500–12,000 per person
  • Children under 2 years: Free (no separate seat)
  • Children 2–12 years: 50% of adult fare

Weather Cancellation Policy

Kedarnath helicopter operations are highly weather-dependent. Mountain weather changes in minutes.

  • If a flight is cancelled due to weather, IRCTC reschedules you to the next available slot at no additional cost.
  • Full refund is issued if no rescheduling is possible within your travel window.
  • If you cancel: 100% refund if cancelled 48 hours before flight; 50% refund if cancelled 24–48 hours before; no refund within 24 hours.

Tips for a Smooth Helicopter Experience

  • Book as soon as the portal opens (typically February–March 2026) — slots for May–June disappear within days.
  • Keep your Yatra registration slip and Aadhaar card accessible at the helipad.
  • Maximum baggage: 5 kg per person. Excess luggage is not accepted.
  • Reach helipad 1 hour before departure for security check and weighing (total passenger weight must not exceed helicopter capacity).
  • Do not rely solely on helicopter if you have strict time constraints — weather cancellations are common, especially in June. Have a trek-day as a backup plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Book via the official IRCTC helicopter portal (heliyatra.irctc.co.in) or authorised operators like Pawan Hans, Heritage Aviation, and Arrow Aviation. International credit cards (Visa/Mastercard) are accepted. We strongly recommend booking through us — we monitor cancellations and rebook if your slot is cancelled due to weather.

Phata and Sirsi helipads are closest to Kedarnath and offer the shortest flight time (7–10 minutes). Guptkashi and Agastmuni are further away (15–20 minute flight). Sonprayag helipad is IRCTC-operated and most popular. Book the helipad that matches your road route — we advise based on your itinerary.

Return helicopter fares range from ₹9,000 to ₹14,000 per person depending on the operator and helipad. One-way fares are ₹4,500–7,000. IRCTC-operated Sonprayag route is the cheapest. Prices are government-regulated and published before each season opens.

Helicopter services are suspended in bad weather (heavy cloud, rain, wind). If your flight is cancelled, you will be rescheduled to the next available slot or issued a refund. This can mean waiting 1–3 extra days at Guptkashi/Sitapur. Always build buffer days into your itinerary. Our team monitors weather daily and alerts you.

Weight allowance is strictly limited — usually 5–7 kg of carry-on per passenger. Excess luggage must be left at the helipad base. Porters are available to carry bags on the trek if you plan to walk one way and fly the other. We can arrange secure luggage storage at our partner lodges.

Both have merits. The trek (14 km, 5–7 hours) is spiritually rewarding — the gradual ascent, the mountain views, and arriving at the temple on foot gives a profound sense of achievement. The helicopter (7–10 minutes) is ideal for elderly pilgrims, those with knee/heart conditions, or those with limited time. Many devotees combine: trek up, fly back.
