Char Dham 2026 Temple Opening Dates (Kapaat Udghatan)

The Char Dham temples open annually on auspicious dates determined by the Vedic calendar (Panchang). The dates are announced by the respective temple committees at Makar Sankranti (January 14) each year. The opening ceremony is called Kapaat Udghatan and draws massive crowds — planning around the exact opening dates is critical to avoiding peak rush.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yamunotri and Gangotri open on Akshaya Tritiya (usually late April/early May). Kedarnath follows on Shiva's auspicious muhurat — typically 2–5 days after Gangotri. Badrinath opens 10–15 days after Kedarnath. Exact 2026 dates will be announced by the Uttarakhand government in March 2026.

Yes. Foreign nationals are welcome to visit all four dhams with a valid Indian visa. Biometric registration via passport number is accepted at all online and offline registration centres. No additional permit is required for international tourists visiting the Char Dham circuit.

Plan buffer days in your itinerary — opening dates can shift by 1–3 days due to weather or astrological calculations. Kedarnath is most unpredictable. If you arrive early, Haridwar and Rishikesh offer excellent sightseeing, and the Ganga Aarti is a worthy start to any pilgrimage.

May–June for the opening season energy and full facilities. September–October for post-monsoon clarity, cooler weather, and dramatically reduced crowds. July–August is monsoon season — manageable but landslide risk increases. November sees the temples close for winter.

Yamunotri and Gangotri typically close on Diwali (October/November). Kedarnath closes on Bhai Dooj (2 days after Diwali). Badrinath is the last to close, usually in mid-November. After closing, the deities are moved to their winter abodes — Kharsali, Mukhba, Ukhimath, and Pandukeshwar respectively.
