Visit one of the Seven Wonders of the World in a single day. Pickup from Delhi at dawn, see the Taj Mahal at sunrise, explore Agra Fort, return to Delhi by evening.
About This Tour
Junegiri Yatra's Taj Mahal Day Tour from Delhi at ₹6,500 per person is a single-day, guided trip to Agra covering the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, and Mehtab Bagh. The tour departs from Delhi early morning (5 am recommended), uses the Yamuna Expressway, and returns by evening. It is designed for travellers with limited time who want to see the Taj Mahal properly rather than as a rushed stop.
The tour includes AC vehicle with driver, local Agra guide (English-speaking), and monument entry fees for the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, and Mehtab Bagh. Pickup and drop-off at your Delhi hotel or Haridwar/Rishikesh is included. Meals are not included, but the guide recommends clean, reliable restaurants at Agra for lunch. The tour is available on all days except Fridays (when the Taj Mahal is closed for maintenance).
The itinerary is timed carefully: 5 am departure from Delhi, Taj Mahal from 6:30–9 am, Agra Fort from 9:30–11:30 am, lunch break in Agra, Mehtab Bagh at sunset (4:30–5:30 pm), return to Delhi arriving by 8–9 pm. The structure gives you the best light at the Taj, a full Fort visit, and the sunset rear view from Mehtab Bagh without feeling hurried.
This day tour is especially popular with travellers doing a Char Dham pilgrimage through Haridwar who want to add an Agra detour at the start or end of their trip via Delhi. For a comprehensive north India heritage experience, our 5 Nights / 6 Days Golden Triangle Tour adds Delhi sightseeing and Jaipur to this Agra base. What Travelers Say
Taj Mahal Day Tour from Delhi: A Practical Guide
The Taj Mahal Day Tour from Delhi is the most efficient way to visit Agra and return to Delhi within a single day. At ₹6,500 per person, our tour covers the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, and Mehtab Bagh with a vehicle, driver, and local guide. If you are in Delhi for a short stay and want to see the Taj Mahal without committing to a multi-day trip, this is the right option.
Why the Taj Mahal Matters
The Taj Mahal is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is consistently ranked among the most visited monuments in the world. It was built between 1632 and 1653 by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan as a mausoleum for his wife Mumtaz Mahal, who died in childbirth in 1631. The complex covers 17 hectares on the south bank of the Yamuna River. Its architectural significance lies in the synthesis of Persian, Islamic, and Indian decorative traditions — the symmetry of the complex, the use of white Makrana marble from Rajasthan, and the inlay work using 28 types of precious and semi-precious stones from across the world are details that reward close inspection.
Best Time to Visit the Taj Mahal
The first entry slot (6 am) is by far the best for two reasons: the light is soft and photogenic, and the crowd is a fraction of what arrives after 9 am. By 10 am in peak tourist months (October–March), the main plaza in front of the mausoleum can have several thousand people. The Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays for cleaning and maintenance.
Seasonally, October to March is the best window. The weather in Agra is pleasant (morning temperatures around 8–15°C in December–January, 20–28°C in October–November and February–March). Summer (April–June) is very hot — the marble surface heats up quickly and the complex can be uncomfortable by 9 am. If you must visit in summer, arriving at exactly 6 am and leaving by 8:30 am is the only workable strategy.
What to See: Inside the Taj Complex
The Taj Mahal complex has four main structures, all built to be architecturally interdependent:
- Main Mausoleum — the central white marble structure housing the cenotaphs of Mumtaz Mahal and Shah Jahan. The actual graves are in a crypt below, not open to the public. The marble exterior has detailed pietra dura inlay. Spend 30–45 minutes here.
- Mosque — the red sandstone mosque to the west of the mausoleum, still used for Friday prayers. Entry is free with a Taj Mahal ticket.
- Jawab (Guest House) — the mirror-image structure of the mosque on the east side, built for symmetry. It was never used as a mosque since it faces the wrong direction for prayer.
- Charbagh (Garden) — the classic Mughal four-part garden divided by water channels. The long reflecting pool running from the main gate to the mausoleum is the centrepiece. Walk slowly through the garden on both sides for different perspectives of the main dome.
Practical Rules at the Taj Mahal
Several rules are strictly enforced and worth knowing before you arrive:
- Leather shoes are not permitted on the main mausoleum plinth. Cloth shoe-covers (booties) are provided free at the plinth entrance.
- Food and drinks are not allowed inside the Taj complex (water in a clear bottle is permitted).
- Tripods and monopods are not permitted inside the complex.
- Photography is not allowed inside the main mausoleum (inside the inner chamber around the cenotaphs).
- The main gate security checks are strict — leave heavy bags at your vehicle.
Agra Fort: Worth the Extra Hour
Agra Fort is 2 km from the Taj Mahal (10–15 minutes by vehicle). Entry is separate. The fort covers 94 acres and served as the principal Mughal imperial residence before Shah Jahan moved the court to Delhi. Inside, the key sections are the Khas Mahal (private royal quarters), Anguri Bagh (inner garden), and the Musamman Burj — the octagonal tower where Shah Jahan was placed under house arrest by his son Aurangzeb and from which he could see the Taj Mahal across the river. The fort visit takes 1.5–2 hours.
Mehtab Bagh: Rear View of the Taj Mahal
Mehtab Bagh (Moonlight Garden) is a Mughal garden on the north bank of the Yamuna, directly opposite the Taj Mahal. It provides the best unobstructed rear view of the main mausoleum — especially useful for photography since the front of the Taj is often crowded with people. The garden was laid out by Babur and later restored. Entry is ticketed and much cheaper than the Taj. The garden is best at sunset when the marble takes on a warm tone. It is 3 km from the Taj Mahal by road.
The Drive from Delhi to Agra
The Yamuna Expressway (Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority) connects Delhi to Agra in 3–3.5 hours under normal traffic conditions. The expressway is a 6-lane controlled-access highway with clean rest stops at regular intervals. Departing from Delhi by 5 am allows arrival at the Taj Mahal gate by 8–8:30 am, which is still early enough to beat the full crowd. Return to Delhi is comfortable by early evening, arriving back by 7–8 pm.
Combining with the Golden Triangle or Overnight Agra
The Taj Mahal Day Tour can be extended into an overnight Agra trip — add a night at an Agra hotel and visit Fatehpur Sikri (40 km) the next morning before returning to Delhi or proceeding to Jaipur. This makes it a natural entry point into the full Golden Triangle Tour 5N/6D, which covers Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur in depth. For an overview of all our Taj Mahal tour options, see the Taj Mahal Tours hub page. Travellers coming from Delhi or visiting from Pune via Delhi can combine this day tour with a Haridwar pilgrimage trip for a comprehensive north India itinerary.
