Ayodhya Ram Mandir: Complete Visitor Guide 2026
Ayodhya, situated on the banks of the Sarayu river in Uttar Pradesh, is one of the seven sacred cities (Sapta Puri) in Hinduism and the birthplace of Lord Ram. The city gained global attention when the Ram Mandir was inaugurated on January 22, 2024 — a grand temple complex built at the exact birthplace of Lord Ram, drawing millions of pilgrims in its first year.
The Ram Mandir
The newly consecrated Ram Mandir is built in the Nagara style of temple architecture. The main shrine houses the idol of Ram Lalla (infant Ram), consecrated in the Prana Pratishtha ceremony in January 2024. The temple complex spans 70 acres with the main temple, ancillary shrines, a museum, and public facilities. The black stone Ram Lalla idol is approximately 51 inches tall and is considered one of the most significant religious consecrations in modern Indian history.
Ram Ki Paidi
The sacred ghats on the Sarayu river are central to Ayodhya's spiritual identity. Ram Ki Paidi features 14 ghats where pilgrims take a ritual dip believed to cleanse sins and grant merit equal to bathing in the Ganga. The evening aarti at Ram Ki Paidi, performed at dusk, is one of the most atmospheric experiences in North India — brass lamps on the water, chanting priests, and the sounds of conch shells carrying across the Sarayu.
Hanuman Garhi
Built in the 18th century and standing at the centre of Ayodhya, Hanuman Garhi is a fort-like temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman. Tradition holds that one must visit Hanuman Garhi before proceeding to Ram Mandir — Hanuman is the guardian of Ayodhya. The 76 steps to the hilltop temple offer panoramic views of the town. The sanctum houses a large murti of Hanuman with his mother Anjani.
Kanak Bhawan
Perhaps the most visually stunning temple in Ayodhya, Kanak Bhawan is said to have been gifted by Kaikeyi (Ram's stepmother) to Sita as a personal palace on their wedding day. The current structure dates to 1891 and features exquisite interiors with gold-adorned idols of Ram and Sita crowned with elaborate headgear. Photography of the main idol is restricted. The temple's intricate ornamentation makes it a must-visit even for non-pilgrims.
