While fewer flower species bloom than August, the late-season Gentiana (gentian blue) and Aster create a different but equally beautiful landscape. The valley feels personal and unhurried, and the mountain views — Nanda Devi, Hathi Parbat, Nilgiri Parbat — are their sharpest of the year.
The Valley of Flowers National Park closes on October 5 every year by government order. Hemkund Sahib gurudwara typically closes in mid-October. September visits have a comfortable buffer — the last week of September still allows 5–7 days before closure. Do not plan a September 28+ arrival expecting the full 5-day package; verify your dates against the October 5 closure.
September is excellent for wildlife. As the monsoon withdraws and fewer trekkers are present, Himalayan brown bear sightings increase near the forest edge at Ghangaria. Snow leopard are exceptionally rare to spot but are present in the high ridges. More commonly seen: Himalayan monal pheasant (India's most colourful bird), Bharal (blue sheep) on the higher slopes, and musk deer in the forest sections between Govindghat and Ghangaria. Carry binoculars.
