Our Verdict
Choose Kedarkantha if you want a winter snow experience, you're based in Delhi/Haridwar, this is your first Himalayan trek, or you want the iconic summit-at-sunrise moment on a budget. Choose Hamta Pass if you're trekking in summer, you want the unique experience of crossing from one Himalayan world to another, or you want to add Chandrataal and a taste of Spiti to your itinerary. Both are exceptional — the season and your base city often make the decision for you.
Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Kedarkantha is slightly better for absolute beginners. It is graded Easy–Moderate (vs Moderate for Hamta Pass), the pass crossing on Day 4 is the only challenging section, and the gradual 3-day acclimatisation profile is forgiving. That said, Hamta Pass is also accessible to first-timers with reasonable fitness — the pass crossing day is harder but the approach days are very manageable.
Not in the same seasonal window — Kedarkantha runs December–April while Hamta Pass runs June–September. However, combining them across two separate trips in one year is absolutely possible and gives you the complete Himalayan experience: winter snow in winter, summer meadows in summer.
Both are stunning in different ways. Kedarkantha offers a single dramatic 360° summit panorama (Swargarohini, Bandarpoonch, Gangotri range) at sunrise — a classic snow-peak view. Hamta Pass gives you two contrasting panoramas: the green Kullu valley below and the barren Spiti desert above the pass, plus Chandrataal's extraordinary high-altitude lake reflections. Hamta has more variety; Kedarkantha has the more dramatic single moment.
Kedarkantha is significantly more accessible from Delhi. The Haridwar base is 6 hours by train from Delhi — a straightforward overnight journey. Manali (Hamta Pass base) is 14 hours by bus or requires a flight to Bhuntar. For Delhi/Chandigarh travellers, Kedarkantha is the easier choice logistically.
That's the perfect combination. Hamta Pass in July–September for summer meadows and the Spiti crossover, then Kedarkantha in December–February for the snow summit experience. Junegiri Yatra operates both routes year-round in season — WhatsApp us to plan both and we'll coordinate the logistics.
