Jim Corbett National Park core zone (Dhikala) reopens on October 15 annually. Buffer zones open earlier in some years. The first weeks of October (post-15th) are extraordinary for wildlife — tigers that have been largely unseen during monsoon return to predictable water sources and grassland edges. The Ramganga river is high and fish are abundant, bringing leopard, gharial, and elephants to the banks. First-week-of-opening Corbett safaris are considered the best of the year by wildlife photographers.

In October, the Naini Lake is at its highest water level after the monsoon has filled it completely. The water is clear, the level reaches the maximum shoreline, and the lake surface reflects the surrounding hills with exceptional clarity. By contrast, in May, the lake level is lower after the dry spring season, and some algae growth can affect water clarity. For photography and boat rides, October offers the superior lake experience, combined with post-monsoon Himalayan clarity that May cannot match.
