May is genuinely very crowded in Nainital — Mall Road can have Delhi-Metro-level density on weekends. The lake and cable car queues are 30–60 minutes on Sundays. The solution: stay 5+ nights to access quieter mid-week mornings, include Bhimtal (8 km, far less crowded) and Sat Tal (22 km, almost no tourists) as day excursions, and do Naini Lake before 8 AM. Despite the crowds, Nainital's hill station charm — cool air, lake views, walk-everywhere town — is worth it compared to the 40°C plains.

Mukteshwar (2,286 m, 51 km from Nainital) is the highest hill station in Kumaon and significantly cooler than Nainital in May. It offers panoramic views of over 300 km of Himalayan peaks including Nanda Devi (7,816 m, India's second highest). The Chauli Ki Jali rock outcrop — a 5-minute walk from Mukteshwar town — gives a sheer cliff face view over pine forests with Himalayan backdrop. In May when Nainital feels warm, Mukteshwar is 5–7°C cooler and feels genuinely alpine.

Corbett's Dhikala zone closes on June 15, so May is the last month for core zone access. Tiger sightings in May are excellent because water sources are concentrated and vegetation is low. The heat (35°C in Corbett valley) is intense, but dawn safaris (departing at 5:30 AM) are cool and the golden morning light creates outstanding wildlife photography conditions. Book Corbett dawn safari for the first morning; it's an easy 1.5-hour drive from Nainital and a natural extension of the Kumaon hill station experience.
