Lathmar Holi at Barsana (Radha's birthplace) is a pre-Holi ritual festival that re-enacts the legend of Krishna visiting Barsana to tease Radha and her companions. The women of Barsana (Radha's gopis) ritually beat the men of Nandgaon (Krishna's village) with bamboo sticks as they try to apply colour. The men carry shields and wear protective headgear. The next day, the ritual is reversed at Nandgaon. This 5,000-year-old tradition draws international photographers and pilgrims. The energy is joyous, theatrical, and deeply sacred simultaneously.
