The Hindu month of Kartik (October–November) is considered the holiest month for Braj — the birthplace of Lord Krishna. Every evening during Kartik, Vrindavan holds Kartik Deepotsava (lamp festivals) and special bhajan sessions. The Parikrama (circumambulation) of Vrindavan (11 km) and Govardhan Hill (21 km) draws millions of pilgrims during this month. The atmosphere of Vrindavan in Kartik — thousands of devotees in white, constant kirtan, lamps floating on the Yamuna — is the most intense and moving Krishna pilgrimage experience in India.

The Banke Bihari temple in Vrindavan is unique in Indian temple culture. The curtain (parda) in front of the deity is opened and closed every few minutes by priests — the theological reason is that direct, sustained eye contact with Bihari ji is considered so powerful that intervals are necessary. This creates an extraordinary rhythm during morning and evening aarti: the curtain parts, 5,000 devotees surge forward, the curtain closes, they pull back — a beautiful collective spiritual motion. Photography inside is strictly prohibited. Arrive at 7 AM for morning darshan.
