Heavy October snowfall can make the upper section of the trek (Kedarnath base to temple, last 2 km) difficult. In such cases, SDRF may redirect pilgrims to helicopter services from Phata or Sersi, which operate regardless of trail snow as long as visibility is adequate. On the day of Kedarnath temple closing (Bhai Dooj, 2–3 days after Diwali), the Panchmukhi idol of Lord Kedarnath is ceremonially placed in a palanquin (doli) and carried by priests on foot to Ukhimath village (25 km), where the deity is worshipped through the winter. The procession is accompanied by Vedic chanting, music, and thousands of devotees. Pilgrims at Kedarnath on closing day witness the entire ceremony.
