The 18 km trek from Gaurikund to Kedarnath temple is graded moderate-difficult in May due to icy patches on the upper 5 km section. BRO clears and marks the trail before the opening date, but crampons or trekking poles are advisable above Lincholi. Start no later than 6 AM to complete the ascent before afternoon cloud cover arrives. Fitness level should be moderate at minimum.
The Mahabhishek is the grand inaugural puja performed by the Rawal (head priest) of Kedarnath when the temple opens each year. It involves bathing the Swayambhu Shiva lingam with Panchamrit, milk, ghee, honey, and sacred water. Pilgrims present during the opening day can witness this ceremony from the sabha mandap. Space is extremely limited; arrive at Kedarnath by 3 AM on opening day.
Kedarnath is at 3,583 m (11,752 ft) — high enough for altitude sickness in unacclimatised individuals. Spend one night in Guptkashi (1,319 m) before ascending. Stay hydrated, avoid alcohol, and climb at a steady pace. Symptoms to watch: severe headache, nausea, breathlessness at rest. SDRF posts first-aid teams at Kedarnath base, and oxygen cylinders are available at the temple.
