Mahashivratri at Haridwar is one of India's largest single-night religious gatherings. Millions of Kanwariyas (Shiva devotees who carry water from the Ganges for Shiva temples in their home districts) arrive for the sacred Ganga Snan (holy dip). The ritual bathing is continuous from midnight to dawn. All 52 ghats in Haridwar are packed with devotees. The Har Ki Pauri ghat specifically is where the most auspicious bathing spot (Brahmakund) is located, believed to be where Amrit (nectar of immortality) fell during the Samudra Manthan.

Neelkanth Mahadev temple (1,330 m) is one of the most important Shiva temples in Uttarakhand — the spot where Shiva is said to have consumed the poison (Halahal) that emerged from the Samudra Manthan, turning his throat blue (Neelkanth = blue throat). The temple is 22 km from Rishikesh by road (1 hour) or accessible via a 14 km forest trek from Swarg Ashram. On Mahashivratri, hundreds of thousands walk the forest trek as a devotional act. In non-festival February, the trek through Rajaji National Park forest is a peaceful nature-and-spirituality combination.
