Galungan is Bali's most important Hindu festival — a 10-day celebration when the gods descend to visit their devotees, and ancestors visit their families. The island transforms: bamboo poles decorated with offerings (penjor) line every road, temples host elaborate ceremonies, and Balinese families dress in traditional attire for temple visits. Galungan day and Kuningan day (10 days later) are the most intense. Witnessing Galungan is a once-in-a-Bali-lifetime experience. It occurs every 210 days by the Balinese Pawukon calendar — check the 2027 dates as it may fall in April, May, or later.

May is a transition month — rains reduce significantly compared to November–April monsoon peak. In 2026/27, May typically sees 5–8 rain days (mostly short afternoon showers of 30–60 minutes) versus 15–20 rain days in January. Mornings are generally sunny and beach-friendly. The South Bali coast (Seminyak, Kuta, Uluwatu) dries faster than Ubud. Water clarity for snorkelling at Nusa Penida is improving in May but reaches its best in June–August. For beach-primary trips, June is safer; for culture and cost, May is excellent.

Accommodation: 25–40% cheaper in May. A Seminyak villa that runs USD 200/night in July may be available at USD 120–150 in May. Beach clubs: entry fees and minimum spends are often waived or reduced. Flights: 15–25% cheaper from India. Activities (Nusa Penida, Batur trek, cooking class): similar prices year-round but better availability without advance booking. For a 7-night Bali trip, the May saving vs July is typically ₹8,000–15,000 per person on accommodation and flights combined — meaningful for groups.
