Why Mathura and Vrindavan Attract International Visitors

Mathura β€” 150 km south of Delhi β€” is the birthplace of Lord Krishna, one of the most beloved deities in the Hindu pantheon and a figure of global significance through ISKCON (the Hare Krishna movement). Vrindavan, 15 km from Mathura, is where Krishna spent his childhood β€” every lane here is considered sacred, every temple tells a story from the Bhagavata Purana.

For ISKCON devotees and followers of Vaishnavism worldwide (from Russia to Hawaii to South Africa), Mathura-Vrindavan is a lifetime pilgrimage. For general international tourists, the temples, street life, Holi celebrations, and unique spiritual atmosphere make it one of India's most memorable day-trips or overnight destinations.

Key Temples and Sites

Krishna Janmabhoomi, Mathura

The prison cell where Lord Krishna is believed to have been born β€” adjacent to the Keshav Deo temple complex. International visitors are welcome. Photography is not permitted inside the sanctum. The complex includes a mosque and temple side by side β€” a unique historical juxtaposition.

Banke Bihari Temple, Vrindavan

The most beloved Krishna temple in Vrindavan β€” the deity here (Banke Bihari) is considered a living presence. The temple atmosphere during aarti is electrifying β€” crowds surge forward to glimpse the deity before the curtain is momentarily drawn. English-speaking priests are often available for foreign visitors.

ISKCON Temple, Vrindavan (Sri Sri Krishna Balarama Mandir)

Built in 1975 by ISKCON founder Srila Prabhupada β€” the most accessible temple for international visitors. English-speaking devotees, a guest house, prasadam restaurant, and extensive visitor facilities. The deities of Radha-Shyamasundara and Gaura-Nitai are elaborately dressed and beautifully presented.

Prem Mandir

An extraordinary white marble temple inaugurated in 2012 β€” the architecture and bas-relief carvings depicting Krishna's life stories are exceptional. Illuminated at night (best visited in the evening). Gardens, fountains, and detailed panels make it tourist-friendly.

Holi in Braj β€” The World's Most Famous Festival

Braj's Holi is unlike anywhere else. Two weeks of celebrations culminate in the legendary events:

  • Lathmar Holi at Barsana (25 km from Mathura): Women beat men with bamboo sticks in a ritualistic re-enactment of Krishna's visit to Radha's village. Extraordinary to witness. Held 10 days before Holi.
  • Phool Wali Holi at Banke Bihari temple, Vrindavan: Flowers instead of colours β€” petals showered on devotees. One week before Holi.
  • Holi at Dwarkadheesh Temple, Mathura: The main Holi day celebration β€” intense, colourful, and chaotic in the best possible way.

Book well in advance for Holi β€” accommodation in Mathura-Vrindavan sells out months ahead. Our Braj Holi packages depart from Delhi and include transfers and accommodation.

Getting to Mathura from Delhi

  • Train: Delhi to Mathura is 141 km β€” 2 hours on express trains (multiple daily from Hazrat Nizamuddin and New Delhi stations). Recommended.
  • Road: 150 km via Yamuna Expressway β€” 2.5–3 hours. Our packages include private car from Delhi.
