Kanamo Peak Trek 5N/6D

Kanamo Peak at 5,964 metres (19,567 ft) stands as one of India's highest non-technical summit challenges — achievable without mountaineering equipment like fixed ropes or crampons, yet demanding enough to be a serious achievement for any trekker. Set in the spectacular cold desert landscape of Spiti Valley in Himachal Pradesh, Kanamo offers views that extend from the Spiti range to Kinner Kailash and clear to the high peaks of Tibet on a clear day.

The journey begins with the famous drive from Manali to Kaza via the Rohtang Pass and Kunzum La — itself one of the great high-altitude road experiences in India. Kaza (3,800m) is the administrative capital of Spiti, a small town of whitewashed buildings at the confluence of the Spiti and Pin rivers, surrounded by barren ochre mountains. Two days are spent here and at the nearby village of Kibber for acclimatisation — essential before attempting a summit above 5,900m.

The route to Kanamo base camp (4,300m) passes through the upper reaches of Kibber village — one of the world's highest inhabited villages — and into raw, boulder-strewn terrain typical of Spiti. The base camp offers stark, immensely beautiful views of the Spiti Valley far below. Summit day is long and physically demanding, gaining nearly 1,700m of altitude from base camp, but the summit views are among the most extraordinary in the Indian Himalaya — a complete 360-degree panorama of a landscape that looks more like the moon than India.

Junegiri Yatra provides experienced high-altitude guides with Spiti experience, full camping equipment, all meals, oxygen and emergency supplies, and inner line permits for the Spiti restricted area. Prior experience of trekking above 4,000m is mandatory for this trek. AMS protocol is strictly followed.
