Frequently Asked Questions — August
August offers the optimal balance: the glacier approach has just enough snow for stability without being overly heavy, crevasses are mapped and known from the season, and the Pin Valley side remains clear under Spiti's rain shadow. It's the month with the highest summit success rate and safest glacier conditions.
The pass is a narrow rocky notch between the Parvati and Pin watersheds. On the south (Parvati) side you see lush green valleys and distant Kullu peaks. On the north (Spiti) side, the terrain instantly changes to a barren brown moonscape with snow-capped CB Range peaks. It's one of the most dramatic geographical transitions in the Himalayas.
Junegiri Yatra carries satellite phones and EPIRB emergency beacons on all Pin Parvati expeditions. In case of bad weather, the team shelters at established cache points (Odi Thach and Mantalai base) and waits for safe windows. If the pass becomes unsafe, we reverse via the Parvati Valley — there is no alternate pass crossing.
