Kareri Lake Trek 3N/4D

The Kareri Lake Trek is Dharamshala's best-kept trekking secret — a 3-night, 4-day journey that takes you from the vibrant lanes of McLeod Ganj into a deeply peaceful forest landscape, past roaring river crossings and traditional Gaddi shepherd villages, to a pristine alpine lake nestled under the towering Dhauladhar range at 2,950 metres. Unlike the more crowded Triund ridge, Kareri draws a quieter, more adventurous crowd — and the reward is a lake so clear you can see the bottom, ringed by peaks and rhododendron slopes.

The approach begins from Kareri village, a small cluster of traditional Himachali stone houses an hour's drive from McLeod Ganj. The trail follows the Nyund Nallah stream, crossing it multiple times on log bridges and stepping stones — part of the trek's signature charm. The forest canopy of oak, maple, and rhododendron is spectacular in spring (April–May) when the rhododendrons bloom crimson, and in autumn (October) when the maples turn gold.

The lake itself is a natural glacial bowl at 2,950 metres, almost perfectly circular, with the Dhauladhar peaks reflected on its surface on calm mornings. In early spring the lake is partially frozen; by May it is fully open and the surrounding meadows are carpeted in wildflowers. The camping ground on the lake shore is flat and well-maintained, with a small Forest Department hut nearby. On a clear night, the Milky Way stretches across the sky without a trace of light pollution.

Junegiri Yatra manages all logistics: transport from McLeod Ganj to Kareri village, camping equipment including -5°C sleeping bags, all trail meals, a certified local guide, and Himachal Pradesh forest permits. The trek is graded Easy to Moderate — the river crossings add some challenge but the altitude gain is gradual and manageable. Best season: April to June and September to November.
