<p>The Brahmatal Trek is one of Uttarakhand's finest winter treks, offering trekkers the rare experience of walking across a frozen Himalayan lake at 3,462 metres, surrounded by a pristine snow landscape and commanding views of some of the Garhwal Himalaya's most iconic peaks. Set in the Chamoli district, the trek passes through dense oak and rhododendron forests, open snow-covered meadows (bugyals), and the magical Bekaltal lake before culminating at the Brahmatal summit — one of the most scenic viewpoints in the entire region.</p><p>The trek operates from November to February, when the region transforms into a white wonderland. The trail winds through the villages of Lohajung and Wan, both nestled in the Pindar valley, offering a glimpse into traditional Garhwali life. The Brahmatal lake, believed to be sacred — the site where Lord Brahma performed meditation — lies frozen and pristine in winter, with a perfect mirror of Trishul (7,120m) and Nanda Ghunti (6,309m) visible on clear days.</p><p>Unlike many popular winter treks, Brahmatal remains relatively uncrowded, offering a more authentic and peaceful experience in the high Himalaya. The trail difficulty is moderate, making it suitable for trekkers with basic fitness who have some hill-walking experience. Fly from Leh (IXL) to Delhi (1h 20min) then connect to Dehradun (55 min) — total 3.5 hrs with layover. Road via Manali is possible in summer (June–September) but takes 2 days. Flying is the only year-round option.
Leh is at 3,524 m — almost exactly the same altitude as Kedarnath (3,584 m)! Ladakhi residents are naturally acclimatized. They actually face the opposite challenge — descending to Haridwar (315 m) and then re-ascending. Our guides account for this.
