India Has Three Travel Seasons — Not One

Unlike many destinations that have a single 'best season,' India's diverse geography means different regions peak at different times. Understand the three seasons and you can plan a perfect trip year-round:

  • Winter (October–March): Best for the Golden Triangle (Delhi, Agra, Jaipur), Rajasthan, Varanasi, and city tourism. Dry, cool (15–25°C in the plains), clear skies.
  • Summer (April–June): Best for Himalayan Char Dham Yatra (temples open), Uttarakhand trekking, and high-altitude destinations. Hot in the plains (35–45°C) — avoid city tourism.
  • Monsoon (July–September): Best for Valley of Flowers (peak bloom), lush Himalayan scenery, and budget travel (30–40% lower prices, far fewer crowds). Not ideal for most trekking routes.

Month-by-Month Guide

January — Clear Winter

Golden Triangle: Excellent. Cool (8–20°C), clear skies, low humidity. Morning fog in Agra occasionally obscures the Taj Mahal — eerie and beautiful. Kedarkantha trek: January is peak season — deep snow, spectacular views. Char Dham: Temples closed. Rishikesh: Yoga retreats at peak. Cold but sunny. Recommended for: Golden Triangle, Rishikesh yoga, Kedarkantha trek.

February — Pre-Spring

Similar to January with slightly warming days. Holi falls in February/March — the Braj Holi at Mathura-Vrindavan is extraordinary. Rhododendrons begin blooming in lower Himalayan forests. Recommended for: Golden Triangle, Holi festival, Kedarkantha trek.

March — Spring

Holi (main festival). Rhododendron forests exploding in colour in Uttarakhand. Golden Triangle perfect — warm days (22–30°C), cool evenings. Kedarkantha snow still present. Recommended for: Holi, Golden Triangle, Kedarkantha, Rishikesh.

April — Transition

Golden Triangle starts getting warm (28–36°C). Char Dham preparations begin — temples open late April/early May. Valley of Flowers approach route opening (snowmelt). Kuari Pass and Kedarkantha accessible. Recommended for: Char Dham planning, Uttarakhand trekking, Rishikesh.

May — Himalayan Season Opens

Char Dham temples open (late April/early May). Peak pilgrimage season begins. Kedarnath and Badrinath at their liveliest. Hot in the plains (38–44°C) — avoid Delhi and Agra. Recommended for: Char Dham Yatra, Kedarnath, Badrinath, Himalayan trekking.

June — Early Monsoon

Monsoon hits Kerala/South India mid-June, reaches North India late June. Char Dham and Uttarakhand treks still operating. Valley of Flowers opening (1 June). Hampta Pass accessible. Plains: very hot (40–45°C) with high humidity from late June. Recommended for: Char Dham (early June), Valley of Flowers, Hampta Pass.

July–August — Monsoon

Heavy rains in Uttarakhand — landslide risk on mountain roads. Valley of Flowers in peak bloom. Most treks suspended. Rishikesh rafting suspended. Crowds at Char Dham thin dramatically. Good for budget travellers with flexibility. Recommended for: Valley of Flowers (specialist visits only, with good operator).

September — Post-Monsoon Clarity

Rains clearing mid-September. Uttarakhand trails drying out. Crystal clear skies — best mountain visibility of the year. Char Dham temples still open (close October/November). Kuari Pass and Valley of Flowers (closes 4 October) ideal. Rishikesh rafting resumes. Recommended for: everything — September is our favourite month.

October — Golden Month

Perfect weather across North India — 18–28°C in the plains, 5–15°C in the mountains. Golden Triangle ideal. Char Dham temples closing (late October/November). Himalayan panoramas exceptional. Post-monsoon wildflowers still in bloom. Diwali (October/November) — spectacular festival of lights. Recommended for: Golden Triangle, Char Dham closing season, Kedarnath, Kuari Pass, Diwali.

November — Late Autumn

Char Dham temples close for winter (late October/early November). Getting colder in mountains. Golden Triangle excellent — cool, clear, manageable crowds. Rishikesh yoga season at full swing. Kedarkantha trek begins (snow arriving at summit). Recommended for: Golden Triangle, Rishikesh yoga, Kedarkantha (late November).

December — Winter

Golden Triangle cool and clear — Christmas/New Year a popular time (book well ahead). Kedarkantha in full snow. Auli skiing season begins. Char Dham closed. Rishikesh peaceful and cool. Recommended for: Golden Triangle, Kedarkantha snow trek, Auli skiing, Rishikesh yoga.
