Complete Himalayan Trekking Guide

Junegiri Yatra has been crafting unforgettable Himalayan trekking experiences for over four years, guiding more than 1,200 trekkers safely across Uttarakhand's most spectacular mountain trails. Based in Haridwar — the gateway to the Himalayas — we offer seamless departures that eliminate the stress of complex logistics from major cities.

Our trek portfolio spans every difficulty level. Beginners can explore the ancient temple trail of Chopta–Tungnath, a gentle 3-night journey reaching 4,000m with sweeping views of Nanda Devi, Trishul, and Kedarnath peaks. For those seeking the iconic postcard summit, Kedarkantha remains our bestselling trek, offering a snowbound summit experience accessible to moderately fit adults between December and April. The UNESCO-recognised Valley of Flowers transforms into a carpet of 300+ Himalayan wildflower species during the July–August bloom season — a truly unmissable spectacle.

Experienced trekkers gravitate toward Roopkund, the mysterious skeleton lake sitting at 5,029m, and the technical Pangarchulla Peak summit at 4,700m, which requires crampons and ice axes during the peak winter season. Our guides hold Himalayan Mountaineering Institute certifications and carry advanced first-aid kits, supplemental oxygen, and satellite communication devices on every trek above 4,000m.

All our Himalayan packages depart from Haridwar and include transportation to the trailhead, accommodation in certified tents or forest guesthouses, all meals on trail, a certified lead guide, and a porter for every two trekkers. We cap group sizes at 12 to ensure each participant receives personal attention and the trail remains pristine. Equipment such as sleeping bags, trekking poles, and microspike attachments is available for rent or included in select packages.

The best trekking months in Uttarakhand vary by trail. Kedarkantha and Pangarchulla are best December through March for snow. Valley of Flowers opens July–August. Har Ki Dun, Kuari Pass, and Roopkund are ideal May–June and September–October. Our team monitors NDMA weather bulletins daily and can reschedule departures in case of extreme weather at no cancellation charge within 48 hours of departure.

Your Complete Guide to Himalayan Trekking from Haridwar

Haridwar sits at the foothills of the Himalayas at 314m above sea level, making it the ideal base camp for any Uttarakhand trekking adventure. Its excellent rail and road connectivity — just 6 hours from Delhi by train — means trekkers from across India and the world can arrive fresh and ready to explore.

How to Reach Haridwar

The fastest option from Delhi is the Shatabdi or Jan Shatabdi Express, taking approximately 4.5–5.5 hours. Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun (35 km away) connects to major Indian cities and serves international arrivals via Delhi hub. From Haridwar, our ground transportation handles all transfers to trek base villages like Sankri, Govindghat, Joshimath, and Ukhimath.

Acclimatisation and Pre-Trek Day

We strongly recommend arriving in Haridwar the evening before your trek departure date. This allows time for a pre-trek briefing, gear check, and a restful night before the early-morning road journey to the trailhead. Haridwar offers a range of guesthouses, ashrams, and hotels across all budgets. Attending the famous Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri at sunset is a spiritually uplifting way to begin any Himalayan journey.

What to Pack

Key items include sturdy ankle-high trekking boots broken in before the trek, moisture-wicking base layers, a fleece mid-layer, and a waterproof outer shell. Sunscreen of SPF 50+, UV-protection sunglasses, a wide-brim hat, and a high-quality headlamp with spare batteries are essential. Carry only 8–10 kg in your daypack; porters handle heavier kit bags.

Food and Water on Trail

All meals — breakfast, packed lunch, and hot dinner — are included in our trek packages. Our trail cooks prepare nutritious, freshly cooked Indian meals using locally sourced ingredients. Drinking water is provided at camp; trekkers should carry a 1-litre personal bottle. Water purification tablets are distributed before each trek as a precaution.

Permits and Regulations

Valley of Flowers National Park requires an entry permit issued at Ghangaria (approx. ₹150/day for Indian nationals). Roopkund falls within the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve and requires a forest department permit arranged by our team. All permit fees are included in our package prices unless otherwise stated. Trekkers are expected to follow Leave No Trace principles — no plastic waste, no campfire beyond designated zones.

Absolutely. Solo travellers join our scheduled group departures and are paired with like-minded adventurers. We have a strong community of repeat solo trekkers. Private solo departures with a dedicated guide are also available at a modest supplement.
